As I finished my demo in Unreal Engine 5 in which I not only explored new features of the game engine but also challenged myself conceptually, I was so hooked up that I decided to go a step further in understanding and presenting Porsche as a very strong brand. Hence I visited their website, analysed a bit how they present their products and decided to present a new Porsche 911 Targa in their own style, but with some differences.
Firstly I tried this in Unreal Engine 5 with Path-Tracing, but unfortunately the rendering was way too slow and I was missing some crucial features. Hence I switched to Blender and rendered all scenes in Cycles render.
In this video I decided to compose music and make sound design completely from scratch in order to maintain absolute control over those subtleties which arise in sonic content and which are enormously important for steering the emotions in the spectators’ mind. And here comes one of the major differences I tried to put in this visual and audible experiment. Porsche usually uses classic music in their videos with strong focus on traditional instruments such as basson, celo, strings, full orchestra with typical Hans Zimmer chord progressions, which is of course totally fine. Now one of the often used claims in Porsche communication is “The Harmony of Tradition and Innovation”. For me the classic music stands definitely for tradition, but in order to emphasise the innovation aspect sonically I think some elements of electronic music would fit perfectly, and this is exactly what I tried in this experiment. By adding some subtle growling leads in Moog style and strong beat I think not only the modernity of the product is accentuated but also that urban energy and drive characteristic for postmodernism is added which is difficult to achieve with pure classical music.
This whole undertaking also took about 25 hours in total including sound design and music composition. All scenes in 4K are rendered in about 14 hours on 2x2080ti. Post was done in Davinci Resolve.
